2026年の春休みに実施したジョージア工科大学リーダーシッププログラムの参加者によるレポートです。

報告者①：School of Engineering, B4

The name of this program was Georgia Institute of Technology Leadership Program　where we could learn much about leadership, and it had 8 days except for arrival and departure day.

On campus, we had many lectures to learn about leadership. Before the arrival of Atlanta, to assess our leadership behaviors and strengths, we conducted three types of self-evaluation: Student Leadership Practices Inventory, Clifton Strengths, and Culture Map. It was fresh to interact with students in Georgia Tech. Also, all the special lectures were valuable. Stacey Doremus, the program Interim Director, gave us opportunities to improve the five practices of exemplary leadership :modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, encouraging the heart. Another professor taught us the leadership growth model, which is the following procedures: knowledge of self, knowledge of others, management of self, management of others. Through the results of self-evaluation, we got to know the personality of each other and discussed what should be improved to act as the exemplary leaders. I will refer to the five practices at the presentation. We had the following activities: dancing the so-ran Bushi (Japanese traditional dance) at the reception party, making Japanese Stab Binding, having meals, and discussing bias. Also, we joined the lecture for the GT students and listened to their discussion, but it was challenging to follow their discussion.

Outside of the university, we visited many museums to learn about leadership. In Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and National Center for Civil and Human Rights, it was impressive how he fought against racism against African Americans and inspired many people. The history of racism was much more serious and deep rooted than I learned or imagined in Japan. In Atlanta History Center, we could know about the history of women in service during the World War Ⅱ and took a tour of Swan House, which represents the lifestyle of wealthy homes around the 1920s. There were adversities to suggest women serve in the war, the machine to solve the code of enemies, and the Japanese Surrender Commemoration Card. It was so valuable for me to learn about war history with a view of other countries. Furthermore, Carter Center was impressive. Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United. Although he was not evaluated well by Americans because he did not cherish the economy very much, he built the Carter Center to contribute to peace and health around the world. I respect him for his exemplary thoughts for the world people as the leader. Every experience was eye-opening!

This program had free time. On Day 4 in the evening, we watched the NBA game of the Atlanta Hawks. The atmosphere and audience were both so enthusiastic. It was not just a game but like an entertainment show. Also, on Day 5, free day, all members could explore Atlanta freely. My group visited Atlanta Botanical Garden, World of Coca Cola, and Georgia Aquarium. There were valuable flowers, the history of coca cola, and fish which we cannot see in Japan. I found out that Atlanta is such an attractive place to travel!

At the end of the program, all students gave presentations about one famous leader’s life and how to apply their leadership to daily life. My group picked up the Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism. I insisted that he did not challenge many difficulties without considering the future and civils and kept steady. So, this is the challenge the process of the five practices which I said before. I would like to think about what is necessary for the great future and be steadier.

The Final Presentation

Other than these contents, we experienced enjoyable activities. I am so glad to experience many things thanks to fantastic participants, professors, students, staff, and people who had something to do with the program. If you are interested in studying abroad even if a little, I recommend you to join the program like this! Nobody will regret joining.

このプログラムはジョージア工科大学でリーダーシップを学ぶプログラムでした。現地に行く前に自分のリーダーシップ性を調べるアンケートを複数おこない、それをもとに講義を受けました。講義内容や自分のアンケート結果をもとに話し合いを行い、たくさんの結果があるのにも関わらず、友達と少し被っている部分もあり興味深いものでした。リーダーシップ性を大きく5つに分けて話し合う講義では、自分に何が足りないのか、また足りないものが同じ人同士でそれを高めて行くにはどうしたらよいのかディスカッションをしました。

現地学生との交流

お昼ご飯の時間では、現地の学生数名と一緒に食事をし、現地での生活や専門内容を聞けただけでなく、自分の英語力を高められるいい機会になりました。

現地の大学は規模がかなり大きく、施設もすごく充実していました。立派なスタジアムや広いジム、卓球台もあり、1回ではまわりきれないぐらいでした。Greek lifeという、現地の寮で交流を深めるイベントではみんなでクッキーを焼いたり、ダンスをしたりして暖かく歓迎してもらえて嬉しかったです。

講義だけでなくアトランタの人権問題にまつわる歴史館なども訪問しました。アトランタはキング牧師の生まれの場所でもあり、黒人白人の人種問題が起きた地域です。昔よりは無くなったもののいまだに差別が残っていました。キング牧師の話は中学生の時に少し学んだことがありましたが、実際の差別内容は詳しくは知らなかったため、実態に衝撃を受けました。現地に行くことでしか知り得ないことも多くあったので、学ぶことができてよかったです。

また、講義終わりには全員でNBAの試合を観にいきました。バスケットボールの試合自体観たことがなかったのですが、直接見ると迫力がありと面白かったです。日本では、相手チームがミスをしても何もしませんが、アメリカでは当たり前のように煽っていてとても新鮮でした。試合の合間には会場からタオルが飛んできて、試合以外も面白かったです。全員で声を出して応援したので一体感を感じることができました。

 自由時間にはコカコーラミュージアム、水族館、ピードモントパークに行きました。コカコーラミュージアムでは、コカコーラのデザインの遍歴やさまざまな匂いを嗅いだり、自分のコカコーラボトルのデザインをしたりしました。今は赤いデザインが有名ですが、世界各国には多種多様なデザインがあり面白かったです。また、自分で好きな味を混ぜてオリジナルのコーラを作ったりしました。

 水族館は6つほどのブースに分かれていて、それぞれに大きな水槽がありました。珍しい形をしたサメがいたり、ガラス越しではありましたがペンギンに囲まれるコーナーがあったりしました。ピードモントパークは非常に広いく公園で、散歩やジョギングしている人が多かったです。行った時は生憎曇りでしたが、きっと晴れていたらより綺麗な景色を見ることができたと思います。
